I was owed some money but got some junk instead, an ultra 10 and some monitors, assorted other wortless dead dot com crap, but mixed in was a PS2. What games are good? I don't trust website reviews. Or should I just sell this thing on ebay w/ the rest of the crap? The game I got with looks crappy I think (gran turismo 3) I was expecting really fine aliasing and near realism, but it doesn't even look as good as a glide game on a voodoo did 4 years ago, IMHO. Low res jaggedness.... Are the games going to get better, what's good now?

I said it LOOKS crappy. I didn't say anything about play value. It has none for me since I've never been a fan of racers. And foolish right back at you, cornball.

Colossus, it DOESNT look crappy. I dont know how you could say it does. Hands down, GT3 is one of the best looking games out there.
The non anti-aliasing is due to the PS2 hardware. It doesn't support it. The only systems that do are Dreamcast and XBox. Even then, its still not the best anti aliasing.
However, some good games are:
Grand Theft Auto 3 Devil May Cry Final Fantasy 10 SSX Tricky Twisted Metal Black Metal Gear Solid 2 Red Faction Baldur's Gate
I could keep going, but for the sake that I'm really hungry right now, I won't.
Console preference is all based upon what games you like, who its developed by, and if any, a running series. I pick PS2 since Squaresoft develops for them and I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy (since the first one on Nintendo actually).
dont forget dave mirra 2 because you can ride straight at diesels and when they hit you you can just hang on... its so sweet... but other than that it sucks...
I like the square rpgs as well, but I've only played the older ones...Also there's a Baldur's Gate installment I saw that looks good. I loved them on PC. I was just expecting more from the ps2 than it is, I guess. Esp. w\ all the hype. Plus I''m out of touch w\ console gaming. Anti aliasing has been around for a bit. It seems to me the "next gen" boxes should have it. Esp. if the Dreamcast had it!

colossus, the problem with anti aliasing is that it kills the frame rate. even on PCs, you can see a serious degration in frame rate with high resolution anti aliasing turned on. the geforce 3 and radeon 8500 do it better now-a-days ... and with the recent press release of the geforce 4 (code name nv25), high resolution anti-aliasing will soon become a standard (once people can afford the cards).
baldurs gate does look nice ... essentially it has very similar traits to that of Blizzards Diablo.
the beauty of the PS2, unlike any other system out there, is that its backwards compatible with all its old games and already has the dvd capability built in. you dont get that with xbox, gamecube, dc, etc.
the first gen. games for the ps2 looks "ok" ... finally we are seeing games for the ps2 that are utlizing the hardward to the extreme ... but no-where to the max of the ps2 capabilities. Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy 10 are prime examples of that. But hey, Final Fantasy 11 already looks about 10 times better than 10 does.
For sure, however, PS3 will have anti aliasing and more features .... but that won't be released for awhile still.
there are some really good games out there for all the consoles, its just a matter of what you like. I find myself never stopping to play SSX Tricky. its just that good. =) I hear Tony Hawk kicks ass too.
alright, on the way home from work last night I picked up grand theft auto 3. I still don't think it looks as good as it should, but that game made me late this morning...up til 3 a.m. playing. It's really really cool.

yeah, GTA3 is awesome. i really like messin' with the tank. however, i still can't get more than 4 wanted level stars. maybe i have to shoot down the helicopter...
xdtvr, try going further in the game..at least until you get off portland, the limit there is only 4..once you get to umm...shoreside vale you get up to 6, its pretty fun to try and evade the military in a sportscar ;P
OK, first off the PS2 CAN INDEED do outline AA. Just not FSAA (like xbox), dreamcast has 0 AA abilities (Real Time AA was still in the works at 3dfx labs back when the DC video unit was being put to press)
Now, where the PS2 excels (graphics wise) isnt in AA, or even processing power... but in the emotion engine which is amazing. It is capable of many fx that other systems are not. One of which is how it handeles texturing. Some games (FFX) have ultra high rez textures. But when a texture is viewed from far away it is compressed (at about normal rez level) and as a result... looks great from a distance but as you zoom in, it doesnt look much worse.)
uh, no. Dreamcast was the first console to utilize anti-aliasing (poorly for that matter). ps2 does not do anti-aliasing.
the emotion engine is amazing, yes. however, it fails in many of the capabilities that other consoles have (which is why ps3 is coming out so soon already (next year in japan 2003 late, early 2004)).
however, to compete with xbox in the meantime, sony is releasing the hard drive add on that will be running the linux kernal (which is quite nifty). this will expand the capabilities of the ps2 to better compete with the other consoles (aka xbox).
Linux? PS2 ?! ... what ever happend to the linux box? they were spose to come out... a year ago.... right?.. did i miss something?... or did they just merge with sony .. to compete with the X?.. meh.. im gettin that hard drive.... and ps3 and yes, GTA3 is a sweet ass game ... i saw it in the news actually .. some idiot thinks the point of the game is to beat up prostitutes.......
anyway.. this is a beatiful site .. and i just wanna express myself .. without bugging an admin guy...
